BAUBO UNEARTHED is a hybrid experience that weaves together myth, history, and contemporary art to explore resilience, joy, and resistance. Inspired by Baubo, the ancient figure whose irreverent humor broke the cycle of grief in the myth of Demeter and Persephone, the exhibition reveal her transformative spirit. Baubo’s bawdy humor and unapologetic joy challenge despair and oppression, offering a lens through which to confront collective grief and envision future rooted in empathy.
The Eleusinian Mysteries, with their emphasis on the cycle of death and rebirth, echo this theme of transformation. Just as the Mysteries were sacred rites that gifted initiates the promise of renewal, BAUBO UNEARTHED, serves as an invocation of the power to transcend sorrow and oppression through joy and resistance.
This exhibition invites audiences to reflect on the relevance of ancient myths in contemporary struggles. It asks viewer to embrace vulnerability, celebrate joy, and engage in collective healing/defiance. Curator Stephany Colunga envisions Baubo’s lore as a beacon of hope and dissent in turbulent times.
