Throughout this series, I am shooting color 120mm film (Ektar 100) in a Hasselblad with a 180mm lens in order to explore the multitude of ways that a communal space such as the beach can be utilized and enjoyed. I do not have control over the subjects of my photos, what they are wearing, what they are doing, where they are, what the weather is like, and more. The only things I do have control over are my exposure settings, my lens choice/angle of view, and where I am when I take the photo.

I utilize Photoshop to change the color of the sand, water, and sky, in order to evoke a feeling of nostalgia, as well as to allow the viewer to look at this landscape with a fresh perspective. With the installation of the 1,200 pounds of custom-painted, industrial sand, accompanied by audio from the beach that this series was shot at, the viewer is able to enter and affect the environment themselves. Subsequent iterations have allowed the sand to morph in order to accommodate different spaces, shifting and changing just as our beaches here in Huntington Beach do every day.
